Creating an Office for your Garden
Working from Home
Working from home has been a learning curb for everyone during lockdown and it seems to be a trend that is here to stay.
The main issue from working from home is distractions children, dogs and cats and even the delivery man is a distraction when working from home. Balancing the demands of your job alongside walking the dog and home schooling can be difficult and can add to the already added pressures.
A great way to create a more balanced lifestyle working from home is by investing in a garden office for a peaceful haven for work and maybe even an after-work gym.
Do I need planning permission?
One of the benefits of opting for a garden shed over an extension or conservatory is that you do not need planning permission. Outbuildings like sheds, greenhouses and garages don’t need planning permission if they meet the following requirements:
- Single storey with roof eaves, no higher than 2.5 meters;
- Covers no more than half the area of land around the original house;
- Will only by used by members of the household;
- Now used as living accommodation;
- Made from timber.
Rules can very between councils, but Kingston Projects have experience dealing with planning permission to offer you the correct guidance throughout the process.
Location, location, location
When designing a house, the location and orientation is important, same goes for a garden office. You don’t want the new building to impede the view or block the light into your house, and you also want to ensure that the building is receiving some sun throughout the day. Often, at the end of the garden is great location to tick both boxes.
Garden structures are best build on even ground to avoid sloping areas or parts of your garden that could get waterlogged after heavy rainfall – a common occurrence in the UK.

Sheds are the more conventional option when looking for an office space for the garden, but with the popularity of pods on the rise, it can be a difficult decision to make. It’s entirely up to your taste when it comes to which one you decide upon and Kingston projects can offer you great advice and expertise on the best solution for your garden space.
